Peter M. Tan, DDS, MSHS
Born in New York City and raised in Washington, DC, Dr. Peter M. Tan is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who received his American Dental Society of Anesthesiology (ADSA) Fellowship in General Anesthesia in 1990, eventually becoming President of the Maryland Dental Society of Anesthesiology in 1996. He is a past president of ADSA and was appointed as one of the national faculty for the American Dental Association’s “Recognition and Management of Complications during Minimal and Moderate Sedation” course. He is a partner/owner of Mid-Maryland Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, P.A.
Dr. Tan is a past president of the Maryland Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, having served as the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) Anesthesia Clinical Interest Group (CIG) chair, the Abstracts Session chair, the ADSA Liaison to the Committee on Anesthesia, and now serves as part of the faculty for the AAOMS Hands-On Simulated Anesthesia Emergencies course.
Colonel Tan retired after 36 years of Active and Reserve Duty in the Army in 2018. He served as one of the five Army Reserve Regional Commanders in the United States Army Dental Corps, commanding the Pacific and Europe Regional dental commands. He was the ranking reservist in the Army Dental Corps at the Office of the Surgeon General and the Pentagon. Dr. Tan has been awarded the “A” Proficiency Designator in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery by the Surgeon General and is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit.
Dr. Tan served as an assistant professor at the University of Maryland, a visiting lecturer at Howard University, a past president and trustee of the Frederick County Dental Society, the founding president of the Francis Scott Key Study Club in Maryland, a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society. He also served as a former section chief, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Tan is a graduate of St. John’s College High School in Washington, DC; a Notre Dame Scholar of the University of Notre Dame where he received a B.S. in Preprofessional Studies; an honors graduate of Howard University College of Dentistry where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery; the University of Medicine-Dentistry of New Jersey where he performed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency; and St. Louis University School of Medicine/St. Mary’s Health Center where he trained in craniofacial and maxillofacial surgery as a fellow. He also received his Master of Science in Health Sciences in a dual masters program at Touro University, College of Health Science, studying Public Health and Emergency/Disaster Management, graduating Summa Cum Laude.
Dr. Tan has received Fellowships with the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the Academy of Dentistry International, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, and the Academy of General Dentistry. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology.
His non-professional passions include skiing, scuba diving, martial arts, and running. Most of all, he enjoys traveling with his family. His lovely wife and children have been his support system throughout all these years. He is forever in debt for their loving support, constructive feedback, and untiring patience with his service to his profession and country.
